Letting God Into Your Heart
Quiet the noise inside you. Let me quiet you. I have sung to you all of your life. I have comforted you. I have held you. Together, we danced and laughed. For you are home, able to relax and breathe easily, in my presence.
Will you let me in right now? Will you let me hold you now? Will you let me love you? How easy you are to love.
* * *
Lay down everything you are holding. Let your hands be empty at your sides or in your lap. Feel the weight of your fingers as they rest. Feel the heaviness of your arms and shoulders. Let everything sink down, heavy toward the earth.
Take a deep breath. Feel your lungs rise as they completely expand with air. Hold that breath for a moment, and then release it all the way out. And then breathe again, easily and completely, inhaling and exhaling for a few moments with your eyes closed. You might want to play an instrumental song if background music helps your soul quiet and focus.
Welcome Holy Spirit into the room.
Holy Spirit, come. You are welcome here.
Hear Jesus speaking from deep within you:
You are safe here.
You are so very loved here.
Remain here in this space with Jesus for a few minutes, keeping your eyes closed and your breath slow and deep and even.
Picture Jesus’ face. Pay attention to the emotion, the love for you He shows with his eyes. How is He looking at you? Spend some time here with Him.
Next, consecrate your mind, your thoughts, and your imagination now. Give Jesus access to your whole heart. Bring all of your ideas under His authority, Give Him your full attention.
Jesus, I consecrate (bring under your authority) my thoughts and emotions now. Here is my heart.
Now give Him every worry, everything you are fearing and feeling concern about now:
Jesus, I give you….
Next, read the verses below, allowing your heart to soak in them, letting the images in the scenes described play out before you, like a movie in your imagination:
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (Revelation 3:20, NLT).
“I slept but my heart was awake. Listen! My beloved is knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night’” (Song of Solomon 5: 2-4, NIV).
“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them” (Luke 12:37, ESV).
Stay here, in these scenes, for at least 10 minutes. Maybe 30 minutes. Don’t hurry–don’t rush. Let Him speak to your heart. These verses are just the beginning of a conversation He is initiating.
Imagine yourself at the door, hearing Jesus’ knocking from the other side. How do you feel? Excited? Anxious? Hesitant? Unsure?
And then see yourself opening the door and seeing Jesus standing on the other side. Take in Jesus’ face. What does He do when your eyes meet his gaze?
You are so dearly loved. Your company, your voice, your heart is desired.
Allow yourself to stay in these scenes–either by closing your eyes and engaging with Jesus through your thoughts and imagination or by getting out your journal and describing to Jesus how you feel.
Stay…stay. I love you here. Stay here with Me.
Continue to let your heart lead you. Trust it. Trust Jesus engaging with you. Breathe deeply. Relax and enjoy his presence.
I want to be with you. Let my love fill you and fuel you. It is all you need this day.
Stay in Jesus’ presence and invite your heart to worship Him now. Below are some song ideas.
Amen.
