What to Do With All of Your Needs

What if you let go of your need? What if I became your greatest need? What if you put all your needs into my hands? What if your focus was less on your needs and more on me? Do you think I will forget you? Do you fear I won’t hear your cries?

In the darkest night, you are who I think about. In the morning, when dawn breaks, you are the song I sing. All my love is for you, Lord.

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

Find a comfortable place to relax. Perhaps you’ll want to lie down, close your eyes, play instrumental music, and let your breath deepen and slow.

As you sit or lie, open your hands, palms facing up in your lap. Continue to breathe deeply, and relax your shoulders and neck. Relax your ankles, arms, and wrists. Rest easy. Breathe deeply, inhaling for a count of four and then exhaling for a count of four.

You are cared for, seen, and loved right now. There is not one thing you need to hide. How beautiful is this space where God holds you. How beautiful is your heart to God.

As you turn your gaze to God, ask for his covering. Ask for Him to lead you deeper into his heart. Surrender to Him every concern and worry. Consecrate this time of prayer and engagement with Him.

Father, I submit myself to your authority and trust You to lead me now. You are the one I want to be with. Focus the eyes of my heart on You and silence any distractions. Let me breathe deeply of your love now. Help me see your face and abide in your love for me.

Stay relaxed here in his presence. Set a timer for 10 minutes if this helps, and keep your gaze turned to Him. During this time of prayer and connection with God, you might want to repeat aloud to Him (or speak to Him in your heart) Song of Songs 2:16:

“My darling, I am yours, and you are mine.”

Hear Him speaking back to you Isaiah 43:1-3:

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;  I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

Being the children we are, deeply loved and treasured, we can enjoy sanctuary in God’s love. His love is a hiding place of freedom and joy. Spend another 10 minutes with your imagination surrendered to God and enjoy imagining you and Jesus together in God’s sanctuary of love.

  • Breathe deeply and relax. Allow your heart to lead you. In your sanctified imagination, let yourself experience the beauty and peacefulness of this sanctuary where you and Jesus reside.

  • Continue allowing your mind to show you what your heart knows. As you see, hear, smell, and feel this place of sanctuary, consider writing lyrics to a song to God. You have given him your heart; enjoy this time of worshipping Him.

In my imagination, I see…
And this is my song my heart sings to You…

When you feel ready to move on, contemplate the following verses. Read each one slowly and intentionally. Listen deeply to your heart as God speaks to you through his Word:

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

“As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!” (Psalm 40:17).

“Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing” (Psalm 34: 9-10).

What do you hear Him saying to you about your needs? Write down what you listen to Him say in your journal.

What I hear you say to me, Jesus…

In your journal, make a list of your needs. Don’t hold back; be honest and share every need in your heart.

Here are my needs, Lord:

If you give these needs to Jesus, what do you think He will do with them? Tell Jesus what you feel, and then write His response in your journal.

Jesus, if I give You my needs, I think You will…

And this is what I hear you say You will do…

What emotions do you feel when contemplating giving to Jesus your every need?

When I give You my every need, Jesus, I feel…

Continue to stay in the sanctuary with Jesus. Keep your gaze on Him. You might want to converse with Him about these questions He asks us: “What if all your need was put into my hands? What if your focus was less on your needs and more on Me? Do you think I will forget you? Do you fear I won’t hear your cries?”

Stay here, listening and relaxing, allowing your heart to stay engaged. Write a short prayer of praise or song of worship to Him.

Amen.
